The 39th National Games, which will be hosted by Meghalaya in 2027, will “set a new benchmark” for the marquee multi-sport event, Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has said. Now the Centre, state government and sports organisations are scrambling to match up infrastructure, athlete facilities and regional participation with that lofty goal.

In his address at the high level review in New Delhi, Mandaviya evaluated the readiness of Meghalaya and emphasized that the National Games 2027 should reflect the sporting prowess and culture and diversity of the North East. The event is being seen as a major step towards India's ambition of becoming a global sports hub and expanding the reach of the Games beyond the host nations.

The Hills, Infrastructure Push In The Hills

Mandaviya looked at the various projects under way and those in the pipeline such as stadium improvements, indoor arenas and athletes' accommodation in Shillong and elsewhere. State sports officials have said many times that most of the core infrastructure is already in place with a few projects, including some stadiums and training facilities, being fast-tracked to meet pre-Games deadlines. The Centre has also approved a high-altitude training centre in Meghalaya with an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore for the benefit of elite athletes both before and after 2027.

North East In The National Games Spotlight

The 39th National Games will bring a rare opportunity to the North East and Meghalaya to shine on a national platform. The Union government has said that other North Eastern states could be invited to host select disciplines, making it a regional event. This is being sold as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to improve the facilities, secure investment and develop a more robust talent pipeline for local athletes, coaches and sports ecosystems.
