Nurses: The Backbone of Healthcare Needs Urgent Support

Despite being the heart of patient care, nurses worldwide face mounting challenges—understaffing, inadequate pay, and burnout. With a global shortfall of over six million nurses, experts warn that healthcare systems are stretched dangerously thin.  

Investing in nursing is not just about improving patient outcomes—it’s an economic necessity. Studies show that better nurse staffing leads to increased life expectancy and a healthier population, boosting economic growth by nearly 2.4%. Yet, many countries fall short, with India having only 1.9 nurses per 1,000 people, far below the WHO’s recommended ratio of three per 1,000.  

The consequences of neglecting nurses are severe. High attrition rates and workforce migration cost economies millions annually. Each nurse departure can result in losses of up to ₹31 lakh, factoring in recruitment, training, and lost productivity.  

Healthcare leaders stress the need for urgent reforms—better wages, safer work environments, and career growth opportunities—to retain and empower nurses. Without decisive action, the crisis will deepen, impacting patient care and economic stability.
