ONGC to Import Ethane as Qatar LNG Composition Changes

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has announced plans to import 800,000 tonnes of ethane annually starting mid-2028. This strategic move comes in response to the altered composition of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar, which will now supply 'lean' gas stripped of ethane and propane. ONGC's subsidiary, ONGC Petro additions Ltd (OPaL), operates a dual feed cracker that requires ethane as feedstock. To facilitate this import, ONGC is seeking joint venture partners to build and operate Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs). The company has issued an Expression of Interest for potential partners with experience in vessel management, with submissions due by March 27. This initiative underscores ONGC's adaptation to evolving energy dynamics and its commitment to securing feedstock for its petrochemical operations.
