Operation Cyber Silence: India Pulls the Plug on 87K+ Fraudulent Accounts

The Ministry of Home Affairs updated the Rajya Sabha that 3,962 Skype identities and 83,668 WhatsApp accounts involved in digital arrest scams have been closed down. It is part of an extensive exercise against rising cybercrime in India. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has played an important role in identifying and blocking these accounts. Also, more than 7.81 lakh SIM cards and 2.08 lakh IMEIs have been disabled to disrupt the networks of these scammers. The government has also rolled out awareness campaigns and established a two-way helpline (1930) where cybercrimes can be reported. The financial losses due to these scams have seen a rise of more than 2000% in three years; all of which make the need to act paramount.
