Partners in Science and Life: Pune Couple Becomes IISc’s First Husband-Wife Awardees

In a landmark moment for Indian science, Pune-based researchers Dr Shekhar Mande and Dr Sharmila Mande have been honored with the IISc Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award for 2025. This marks the first time in the institute’s history that a married couple has jointly received the accolade, celebrating their individual and collective contributions to science.

Dr Shekhar Mande, former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has been recognized for his leadership in structural biology and public science policy. His wife, Dr Sharmila Mande, will receive the award in December for her pioneering work in computational biology and the human microbiome. She has developed nearly 100 patented algorithms and built one of India’s first large-scale computational biology research programs.
