Paytm's Super App Hits the Brakes: What Went Wrong?

Paytm's vision to emerge as India's top super app has suffered seriously, largely because of an ebbing in user stickiness and regulatory issues. Monthly downloads of Paytm Money dropped from 400,000 in September 2024 to less than 100,000 by February 2025. The implementation of the Zero MDR regime in 2020 drastically affected revenue from UPI transactions, which is a central part of its business model. Moreover, regulatory measures by the Reserve Bank of India also affected Paytm Payments Bank's operations, thus obstructing revenue growth.

 

As competition gets fiercer with competitors such as PhonePe making headways, Paytm's revenue estimates in FY25 indicate a possible dip of 30-35% from the last year. Experts point out that Indian consumers have very different tastes compared to Chinese consumers, making it difficult for Paytm to pursue its super app vision. The future seems uncertain as it deals with these issues while trying to diversify and regain market share.
