At the iconic Museum of Modern Art, PM Modi was welcomed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the stage was set for two days of intensive multilateral talks at the highest level. The summit, which took place on July 6–7, convenes leaders of the enlarged BRICS group—now Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE—to discuss important global issues.

Key Highlights:

Grand Welcome: The Indian community welcomed Modi with a grand welcome with slogans, folk songs and a dance performance re-enacting Operation Sindoor, India's May 7 military operation against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK.

Summit Agenda: Global governance reforms, climate action, the use of responsible AI, reform of international multilateral banks, and international health cooperation are the agenda themes of the 17th BRICS Summit.

India's Agenda: Modi is insisting on robustly condemning terrorism, particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam attack, and promoting climate justice and economic reforms in favor of the Global South.

Voice of the Global South: Offering a counter to the double standards developing countries have faced in terms of climate finance and technology access, Modi positioned India as a fountainhead of inclusive development.

Bilateral Diplomacy: Modi will hold significant meetings with the other BRICS leaders and visit Brasília for the first Indian state visit to Brazil in nearly 60 years, seeking greater defence, trade, and green technology collaboration.

Strategic Context: While Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin continue to be absent, Modi's leadership is crucial in guiding BRICS towards economic collaboration and not polarized politics.

The summit is seen as a good chance for India to emerge as a global agenda-setter, especially before it hosts the BRICS Chairship next year.
