Postal Service Goes Beyond Letters: Department of Posts Launches Medicine Delivery for Ex-Servicemen

In a landmark initiative to support the welfare of military veterans, the Department of Posts (DoP), in collaboration with the Department of Ex-servicemen Welfare (DESW), has launched a specialized medicine delivery service for beneficiaries of the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS). This new service aims to bridge the accessibility gaps faced by ex-servicemen and their dependents by ensuring prompt delivery of medicines not readily available at ECHS polyclinics across India.

 

Nationwide Reach and Efficient Logistics

The service was piloted successfully in Delhi on July 31, 2025, with more than 1,700 medicine packets delivered, leading to an expansion across the National Capital Region (NCR) and subsequently rolling out nationwide from October 17, 2025. The initiative has mapped 458 ECHS locations for comprehensive coverage. Medicines are procured and packaged through Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs) operating Common Service Centres (CSCs) at polyclinics, while India Post’s trusted network handles secure logistics and doorstep delivery to beneficiaries, including those in remote regions.​

 

Integration of Postal and Healthcare Services

By leveraging its expansive postal infrastructure, India Post facilitates last-mile connectivity that overcomes logistical challenges in rural and far-flung areas. This integration of postal services with healthcare delivery exemplifies government commitment to innovation in public welfare, ensuring that ex-servicemen receive essential medicines without delays.​

 

Enhancing Veteran Welfare

The ECHS, under the Ministry of Defence, provides cashless medical care to retired armed forces personnel and their families through a network of polyclinics and hospitals. However, medicine shortages have affected service delivery, necessitating this partnership and the launch of the dedicated delivery system. This program reflects a focus on dignity, timely healthcare, and technological integration, reaffirming India Post’s role as a critical partner in nation-building and social welfare.​

 

Looking Ahead

With this service, the Department of Posts signals its intent to expand doorstep delivery solutions for other vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, utilizing the ECHS logistics model to enhance public service reach and efficiency.
