Power Shift at Maruti Suzuki: Indian Talent Takes the Driver’s Seat

In a first-of-its-kind move, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) has named Sunil Kakkar as its first in-house Indian talent to the Board of Directors. Kakkar, a veteran employee of the company with more than 35 years of association, will be an Additional Director and Whole-time Director (Corporate Planning) for a period of three years from April 1, 2025. This reflects a crucial change in the leadership paradigm, as Japanese parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) recognizes the increasing significance of Indian representation in making strategic choices.

Kakkar’s appointment aligns with SMC’s vision to foster stronger collaboration between Indian and Japanese operations. With six Indian and six Japanese members now on the board, this move underscores India’s increasing influence within Suzuki’s global operations. Kakkar has played a pivotal role in supply chain localization and joint ventures for advanced technologies, making him a key figure in Maruti Suzuki’s growth trajectory.
