Mumbai saw a moment of pride for the Parsi community as the Framji Dadabhoy Alpaiwalla Museum in Khareghat Colony was reopened after a thorough restoration. This unique museum, funded by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) and the Ministry of Culture, reflects the rich heritage, culture, and traditions of the Zoroastrian community. The reopening also reflects the community's commitment to preserving its heritage and making it accessible to a larger audience.

Museum Reopening:

The FD Alpaiwalla Museum reopened on March 29, 2025, after years of restoration supported by the Ministry of Culture and BPP.
It is Mumbai’s sole museum dedicated to Zoroastrian history and culture.

Exquisite Collection:

The museum houses rare artefacts, including cuneiform bricks from ancient Mesopotamia, textiles influenced by Parsi trade with China, Gandhara statues, and personal items of notable figures like Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy and Dadabhai Naoroji.

One of the highlights is the recreation of a Parsi merchant's drawing room and a replica of an interior of a fire temple.

Historical Significance:

The museum was established in 1952 by Framji Dadabhoy Alpaiwalla, a fervent collector of antiques. His extensive collection was put together by Jamshed Maneck Unvala, a great scholar-priest and archaeologist.

Community Involvement:

The restoration had inputs from cultural custodians and conservation architects. The initiative was funded with ₹4 crore by the Ministry of Culture and ₹1.2 crore by BPP.

The reopening event included documentaries on Zoroastrian history and witnessed the participation of leading members of the community.

Future Plans:

Future plans involve developing a museum trail connecting neighboring cultural destinations such as Mani Bhavan. A specialized shop for tourists is also underway.
