Punjab's New Mining Policy: Digging Deeper to Curb Corruption and Unearth Transparency

The Punjab government has brought a new mining policy into force, aimed at eradicating corruption and bringing in transparency to the state's mining sector. Releasing it on May 6, the policy makes registration obligatory for every crusher unit, stockist, and retailer, marking an end to unregulated working that facilitated illegal mining and drain of revenues. An online surveillance system will now track the entire mining process-from digging to transporting-while tough penalties, including heavy fines and suspension of licences, await the offenders.

 

The policy introduces two new categories: Crusher Mining Sites (CRMS) and Landowner Mining Sites (LMS), allowing landowners and crusher owners to mine and sell materials legally at government-notified prices. An Environment Management Fund has also been established to address environmental concerns. Officials say these reforms will end illegal trade, ensure fair pricing, and boost state revenues.
