Quantum Danger Looms: Critical Infrastructure in Peril

Quantum computing threatens to put critical infrastructure in peril, experts say. As the formidable machines evolve, they may decrypt existing encryption mechanisms, threatening important systems such as power grids, water management systems, and finance networks. Industrial Control Systems are being identified as high-value assets by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, where attacks could prove life-threatening and economically ruinous. Although fully functional quantum computers are yet to come in years, companies are advised to get ready now. The United States National Institute of Standards and Technology has announced post-quantum encryption standards to counter this threat, but rolling them out across billions of devices is an enormous task.
