Reimagining Democracy: Election Commission Proposes Aadhaar-Voter ID Linkage for Cleaner Elections

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is weighing the option of making Aadhaar-voter ID linkage compulsory in order to end duplicate registrations. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has summoned the highest level of officials from the Home Ministry, Legislative Department, and UIDAI to hold a meeting over this integration. The decision follows allegations of voter fraud and duplicate EPIC numbers, which were most recently pointed out by the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. At present, Aadhaar being linked to voter IDs is voluntary, as per a Supreme Court judgment. The ECI hopes to address the duplicate EPIC problem within three months and is seeking legal solutions, including new legislation, to make integration smooth. The aim of this effort is to make electoral rolls more accurate and free from duplicate entries so that the electoral process in India remains safe and secure.
