Rhenium-Coated Gold Strips Worth ₹23.76 Lakh Seized at Delhi Airport, Hidden in Personal Care Products

Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport intercepted an Indian passenger arriving from Riyadh on January 21 in a notable enforcement action. A careful examination of his baggage and personal belongings revealed 18 rhenium-coated gold strips, weighing a total of 318 grams, hidden in four Nivea cream boxes and ten Tiger Balm bottles. The gold seized is valued at ₹23.76 lakh. Rhenium, a scarce gray-colored metal, was used to cover up the gold color and was said to be among the most advanced smuggler techniques used. The goods were confiscated, and the investigation is still open for further investigation.
