Rural India's Economic Pulse: RBI Kicks Off May 2025 Consumer Confidence Survey

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has begun the May 2025 cycle of its Rural Consumer Confidence Survey (RCCS), an important gauge of household opinion in rural and semi-urban regions. This bi-monthly survey, now extending to 9,000 households in 31 states/UTs, seeks to gauge perceptions and expectations regarding income, expenditure, employment, and inflation.

Key Highlights:

Scope Enlargement: The survey covers 610 villages across 100 districts, an indicative scale-up from its 2022 beginning. It now encompasses all 28 states and three union territories for pan-India representation.

Areas of Emphasis: Families will provide opinion on the overall economic condition, prices, jobs, and income/expenditure pattern of themselves for the ongoing period and coming year.

Policy Relevance: Findings directly feed into RBI’s monetary policy decisions, with the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting scheduled for June 4-6.

Recent Trends: The March 2025 RCCS revealed optimism, with the Current Situation Index (CSI) crossing 100.1 (neutral threshold) and the Future Expectations Index (FEI) at 125.9, reflecting robust confidence in income growth and moderated inflation expectations.

Inflation Insights: Rural families' inflation expectation eased to 6.6% in March 2025 and their one-year-ahead expectation moderated to 9.3%, reflecting cautious optimism.

The RCCS supplements similar surveys such as the Urban Consumer Confidence Survey and Inflation Expectations Survey collectively providing a balanced perspective of India's consumption-driven economy.
