Russia's Economy Resists Sanctions, but Challenges Lie Ahead

Russia's economy has exhibited surprising resistance to Western sanctions, expanding in 2023 and 2024 despite early predictions of collapse. The nation has used a range of tactics to circumvent sanctions, such as rising state investment in military sectors, "friend-shoring" trade with partners, import substitution, and shadow fleets for exporting oil. While this economic robustness is beneficial, it carries a price. Russia is confronted with increasing inflation, technological lag, and shortages of labor. The economy's excessive dependence on military expenditure and low-technology exports can cause stagnation in the Soviet style in the 1980s. Western nations are currently tightening sanctions and going after Russia's avoidance strategies, which could be very challenging for the Russian economy in 2025.
