Sailing Towards Sustainability: India Supports Global Carbon Tax on Shipping

In a groundbreaking move for climate action, India has joined 62 other nations in backing the world’s first-ever global carbon tax on the shipping industry. This historic decision, adopted by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) after a week of intense negotiations in London, aims to curb greenhouse gas emissions from ships and accelerate the transition to cleaner maritime technologies.

Set to take effect in 2028, the carbon tax will require ships to either switch to low-emission fuels or pay a fee based on their pollution levels. The pricing mechanism is expected to generate up to $40 billion by 2030, with all funds exclusively allocated to decarbonising the shipping sector. However, critics argue that the measure falls short of the IMO’s target to reduce shipping emissions by at least 20% by 2030, as it is projected to achieve only a 10% reduction.

While the agreement has been hailed as a milestone in global climate governance, it has also faced criticism for not addressing the climate finance needs of developing nations. Smaller island nations, particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels, have expressed disappointment over the lack of support for broader climate adaptation efforts.

India’s support for this initiative underscores its commitment to sustainable development and global climate goals, despite opposition from oil-rich nations like Saudi Arabia and Russia. The United States notably abstained from the vote, drawing criticism from climate advocates.
