Samsung Faces $601 Million Import Tax and Penalty Demand in India

Samsung India is assessing legal options after receiving a demand from Indian authorities to pay approximately $601 million in unpaid tariffs and penalties. The dispute centers on the alleged misclassification of telecom components, specifically remote radio heads (RRHs), imported by Samsung. The company has been accused of wrongly availing exemptions on basic customs duty, leading to a significant tax evasion claim. Samsung maintains that this is a legal interpretation issue and is exploring its options. The demand also includes penalties against senior executives, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations.
