Fashion For Good has launched “Beyond50 Denim,” an innovative project aimed at increasing hemp content in denim to 50% and beyond by combining cottonised hemp fibres and green chemistry. This initiative strives to make hemp a mainstream, eco-friendly alternative to conventional cotton, enhancing sustainability in the global denim industry.
Beyond50 Denim: Scaling Hemp to Transform the Future of Sustainable Denim
Fashion For Good, in partnership with global brands Bestseller, C&A, Reformation, PDS Limited, and Target, has introduced the “Beyond50 Denim: Combining Cottonised Hemp and Green Chemistry” project to address the environmental and performance challenges in denim production. The project focuses on overcoming hemp’s limited adoption, historically capped at 20%, by validating cutting-edge technologies that enhance hemp’s softness, durability, and aesthetic appeal.
Important points and notable updates of the project include:
Two pioneering technologies: SEFF’s Nano-Pulse™ technology transforms raw hemp into refined cotton-like fibres, making it easier to spin and integrate, while FIBRE52™’s proprietary green chemistry imparts a softer handfeel to cellulosic fibre fabrics.
Environmental benefits: Hemp cultivation requires significantly fewer water and pesticide inputs than cotton, supports soil health, and offers a climate-resilient alternative that aligns with sustainable and circular fashion goals.
Industry challenge: Despite hemp’s advantages, industry practices and consumer expectations for softness and aesthetics have limited its use in denim, capping hemp content below 20%.
Project partners: Alongside innovation leaders SEFF and FIBRE52™, manufacturers such as Bossa (Turkey) and Nice Denim (Bangladesh) will validate the commercial viability and performance of enhanced hemp blends in denim.
Market potential: The global denim market is expected to surpass USD 115 billion by 2029, predominantly reliant on resource-intensive cotton. Beyond50 Denim aims to open the door for more sustainable fibre alternatives on a large scale.
Visionary leadership: Katrin Ley, Managing Director at Fashion For Good, emphasizes the project's role in combining breakthrough fibre technology and green chemistry to tackle long-standing industry challenges.
Consumer impact: By meeting or surpassing cotton’s benchmarks for performance and appeal, hemp-based denim could reshape consumer expectations and industry standards, fostering increased adoption of sustainable textiles.
Beyond50 Denim represents a transformative collaboration that pushes the boundaries of sustainable fashion innovation. It signals a significant step toward reducing fashion’s environmental footprint while maintaining the quality and style consumers expect.
