The government of Uttar Pradesh has initiated an all-encompassing, state-level campaign aimed at ending child labour by 2027. The mission, revealed in May 2025, is a milestone toward ensuring that all children in the state get to study, be safe, and lead a respectable life. The campaign is multi-faceted, aiming at awareness generation, education, rehabilitation, and financial assistance to vulnerable households.
Mission Overview
-
The campaign seeks to end all types of child labour in Uttar Pradesh by 2027, guaranteeing children's right to education and a life of dignity.
-
It takes a two-pronged approach—awareness, education, and rehabilitation of the affected children.
Awareness and Public Engagement
There will be special awareness campaigns on June 12, 2025, corresponding to the World Day Against Child Labour, to amplify public participation and bring to the forefront the subject.
Education and Rehabilitation Initiatives
-
More than 10,000 child labourers have been reported since 2017, and 12,426 have been rehabilitated and included back in the education system.
-
2,000 working children have been admitted to school under the 'Bal Shramik Vidya Yojana', provided with financial assistance to pursue their education.
-
The scheme further seeks to change social attitudes and instill the importance of education as opposed to child labour.
Economic Support for Families
-
Financial assistance has been offered to 1,089 families to decrease their reliance on child labour for livelihood.
-
The government is operating eight schemes of welfare for organized sector workers with a backing of a ₹40 crore corpus fund.
Action Against Bonded Labour
The government has acted firmly against bonded labour, rehabilitating 1,408 persons during 2018–19 and 2024–25, and extending ₹18.17 crore in financial aid.
Alignment with National and Global Goals
-
The campaign is in conformity with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 8.7, which seeks an end to forced labour, modern slavery, and the worst forms of child labour.
-
The initiative also adheres to constitutional measures banning child labour and safeguarding the rights of children (Articles 23, 24, and 39).
Leadership and Vision
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has stressed that the government's first priority is to ensure the security, dignity, and welfare of each citizen, particularly children.
