She Rises, India Thrives: Female Unemployment Crashes to 3.2% in Economic Triumph

In a dramatic reversal of India's labor market, unemployment among women has fallen sharply to only 3.2% in 2023-24 from 6% in 2017-18. This is supported by a jump in the female labor force participation rate, which climbed to 41.7% in 2023-24 from 23.3% in 2017-18. The increase is most marked in rural regions, where the participation rose by 12 percentage points. Drivers of this change are higher formalization of the labor market, growth in self-employment, and government policies that support women's empowerment. This change marks a new era of economic opportunity and inclusion for Indian women.
