Shifting Gears: Europe's Eco-Friendly Fast Lane to Automotive Success

The European Commission announced a strategic action plan in support of the transition to zero-emission mobility in order to save Europe's automotive industry in dire need of assistance. The plan has earmarked €1.8 billion for battery raw materials; €1 billion specifically for AI-driven and automated vehicle production; and €570 million for the development of charging infrastructure. While the Commission is backtracking to offer manufacturers some scope to meet 2025 emissions targets, it is likely to keep the 2035 target of zero emissions by new cars intact. The wider charter also includes skill enhancement for the workforce, support for SMEs, and maintenance of fair competition against global rivals. Although criticized by many, the proposed scheme wishes to find balance between competitiveness of the industrial sector and environmental goals.
