Simbhaoli Sugars Ltd., already embroiled in a multi-crore banking fraud case, is now facing an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). This development adds another layer of scrutiny to the company's financial dealings, which have been under intense scrutiny since allegations of loan misappropriation surfaced.

SEBI Investigation: The regulatory body has initiated an investigation into Simbhaoli Sugars, focusing on potential violations of securities laws. This move follows a pattern of increased oversight by SEBI into companies facing financial irregularities.

Banking Fraud Case: The company was accused of misappropriating a loan of ₹97.85 crore from the Oriental Bank of Commerce, intended for sugarcane farmers. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached assets worth ₹110 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in 2019.

Insolvency Proceedings: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) initiated insolvency proceedings against Simbhaoli Sugars in July 2024, following a petition by Oriental Bank of Commerce, now part of Punjab National Bank.

Supreme Court Ruling: The Supreme Court recently set aside a directive for a CBI probe into why several banks, including SBI and ICICI Bank, extended loans to Simbhaoli despite its history of defaults.
