Simplifying Trade: 'Proof of Origin' Replaces 'Certificate of Origin' for Preferential Tariffs

The Ministry of Finance has brought about a meaningful simplification in customs procedure by substituting the term "certificate of origin" with "proof of origin" for obtaining preferential tariffs under trade agreements. This revision will simplify compliance and align with contemporary trade agreements that tend to permit self-certification. The modification is a part of the Customs (Administration of Rules of Origin under Trade Agreements) Amendment Rules, 2025. The change makes import processes easier, particularly under Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), where importers can now submit different types of evidence to avail tariff concessions. The step is likely to facilitate doing business and improve trade efficiency.
