Sky-High Ambitions: India's Airport Sector Set for Rs 1 Lakh Crore Investment

India's airport sector is poised for a transformative phase, with an estimated investment of over Rs 1 lakh crore projected over the next four to five years. This significant capital infusion, highlighted in a report by ICRA, aims to address capacity bottlenecks and support the development of both greenfield and brownfield airport projects.  

The investment will focus on building new airports in Jewar (Noida), Navi Mumbai, Bhogapuram, and Parandur (Chennai), while also expanding existing facilities in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, and Nagpur. Additionally, several airports under the Airports Authority of India (AAI) are slated for upgradation to meet the growing demand for air travel.  

Passenger traffic is expected to grow at a healthy rate of 7-9% annually, reaching 440-450 million by FY26. This follows an estimated 10% growth in FY25, driven by increased international travel, improved connectivity to new destinations, and a rise in domestic leisure and business travel. The sector's financial health is projected to remain robust, with strong debt coverage metrics and rising revenues from both aeronautical and non-aeronautical sources.  

This ambitious investment plan underscores India's commitment to strengthening its aviation infrastructure, catering to the rising demand for air travel, and positioning itself as a global aviation hub.
