Skype's Final Call: Microsoft Pulls the Plug After 22 Years

Microsoft has signaled the closure of Skype, the groundbreaking video call service, on May 5, 2025. The move brings a close to 22 years of the service, which changed how people communicate on the internet. Microsoft, having bought Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion, is encouraging users to make the switch to Microsoft Teams, its newer platform for collaboration. Skype users will also be able to migrate their conversations, contacts, and call records to Teams or export their content. The decision is part of Microsoft's attempt to consolidate its communication products and concentrate on Teams, which has 320 million monthly active users, while Skype has a falling number of users.
