Sky’s the Limit: India’s 5th Gen AMCA Jet Powers Up for Launch

India has taken a decisive leap towards joining the elite club of nations with fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the execution model for the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. The move comes at a critical juncture, following heightened tensions with Pakistan and amid China’s rapid expansion of air power.

Key Highlights:

Historic Approval: The Defence Ministry has greenlighted the AMCA programme execution model, marking a major milestone in India’s quest for self-reliance in aerospace and defence.

Indigenous Focus: The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will lead the project, inviting both public and private Indian companies to participate—either independently, as joint ventures, or in consortia.

Strategic Need: The AMCA will be a twin-engine, stealth-heavy, multi-role fighter with advanced avionics, sensor fusion, supercruise capability, and internal weapons bays—designed to ensure air superiority in contested environments.

Timeline: The first prototype is expected by 2028-29, with series production targeted for 2032-33 and Indian Air Force induction by 2034. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) aims to deliver the platform by 2035.

Investment & Industry: The initial development cost is estimated at ₹15,000 crore. The project will leverage lessons from the successful Tejas LCA programme and ensure significant private sector participation to accelerate timelines.

Geopolitical Context: The approval follows ‘Operation Sindoor’ against Pakistan and responds to China’s operational J-20 jets and plans to export J-35 fighters to Pakistan.

Technological Leap: The AMCA marks India’s ambition to join the US, China, and Russia as operators of fifth-generation fighters. Engine development will likely involve foreign collaboration for next-gen propulsion technology.

With this green light, India is set to bolster its air power, reduce dependence on foreign technology, and pave the way for a new era in indigenous defence manufacturing.
