Social Security Milestone: PM Modi Marks 11 Years Of Pension And Insurance Programs

On May 9, 2026, PM Modi highlighted the success of flagship social security schemes launched in 2015. He emphasized that these initiatives have transformed financial inclusion, particularly for underserved communities, and provided affordable insurance and pension coverage to millions.

Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)

PMJJBY offers life insurance coverage of ₹2 lakh for individuals aged 18–50, at a nominal annual premium. As of April 2026, 27.43 crore enrolments have been recorded, with claims worth ₹21,500 crore settled for 10.7 lakh families. 

Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)

PMSBY provides accidental death and disability coverage of ₹2 lakh for people aged 18–70. More than 58.09 crore people have enrolled, and claims worth ₹3,660 crore have been settled for 1.84 lakh families. 

Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

APY ensures a guaranteed pension for workers in the unorganised sector. Over 9.04 crore individuals are enrolled, with women beneficiaries (Nari Shakti) forming a significant share. Modi noted that APY has enabled millions to lead more secure lives in old age.

Together, these schemes have broadened India’s insurance and pension landscape, shielding citizens against life’s uncertainties. They are closely linked to the Jan Dhan Yojana, which expanded banking access, allowing seamless enrolment through auto-debit facilities.
