Vijay’s Political Victory: Actor-Turned-Leader To Be Sworn In As Tamil Nadu CM

After days of political negotiations, Vijay secured majority support in the 234-member Assembly. His party TVK won 108 seats, and with backing from the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the alliance tally rose to 120—two above the majority mark.

Coalition Dynamics

The Congress will join Vijay’s Council of Ministers, while CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML have extended outside support. This coalition breaks the six-decade duopoly of DMK and AIADMK, making Vijay the first non-Dravidian leader to head Tamil Nadu’s government since 1967. 

Swearing-In Ceremony

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar formally appointed Vijay as Chief Minister-designate under Article 164 of the Constitution. The swearing-in ceremony will see Vijay take oath alongside eight to nine ministers. Rahul Gandhi and other national leaders are expected to attend the event. 

Next Steps

Vijay must prove his majority in the Assembly by May 13, 2026. Newly elected legislators will be sworn in on May 11–12, followed by the floor test. Outgoing CM M.K. Stalin urged the new government to continue welfare schemes for women, youth, and marginalized communities.
