Steel Titans Rise: Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar Phase II Ushers in Next-Gen Manufacturing

Tata Steel Limited has inaugurated the Phase II expansion of its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, marking a transformative leap for India’s steel industry. The new facility, launched by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on May 22, 2025, features India’s largest blast furnace and boosts the plant’s crude steel capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA. This milestone cements Odisha as Tata Steel’s largest investment destination, with cumulative investments in the state surpassing ₹100,000 crore over the past decade.

Key Highlights:

Mega Investment: The Phase II expansion, with an investment of ₹27,000 crore, is part of a broader industrial push in Odisha, which saw the inauguration and foundation laying of 24 projects worth ₹1.15 lakh crore, promising 36,000 new jobs in the state.

Technological Marvel: The new blast furnace at Kalinganagar is the largest in India, equipped with advanced eco-friendly features, a dry gas cleaning plant, and the world’s largest Top Gas Recovery Turbine (TRT) for enhanced energy efficiency and sustainability.

Industrial Impact: The expanded plant will supply high-end steel to key sectors including automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, and defence, supporting India’s vision for self-reliance and industrial growth.

Sustainability & Community: The project incorporates rainwater harvesting, zero-process water discharge, and sustainable production practices. Tata Steel’s community initiatives around Kalinganagar have already benefited over 200,000 people with education, healthcare, and livelihood programs.

Recognition & Safety: Kalinganagar is the first Indian manufacturing site named a Global Lighthouse by the World Economic Forum, and has received the ResponsibleSteel™ certification for its commitment to sustainability and safety.
