Tamil Nadu Minister Sparks Controversy with Remarks on North Indian Culture

Tamil Nadu Minister Durai Murugan has sparked a huge controversy by asserting that North Indian culture permits women to marry more than one man, contrary to Tamil culture. Addressing a public meeting, he compared it to the Mahabharata, citing the marriage of Draupadi to the Pandavas, and accused North Indian culture of embracing polygamy and polyarchy. His comments come against the backdrop of the tensions surrounding the planned delimitation exercise, which Tamil Nadu is concerned will cut down its parliamentary representation.

Murugan also faulted the North Indian population growth, blaming the region for neglecting family planning. The BJP demanded an apology from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, terming the comments derogatory and divisive. The controversy has added fuel to the North-South divide with simmering controversies over language and representation.
