Tapping Progress: J&K Hits 81% Rural Water Coverage, Srinagar and Ganderbal Go 100%

Water access expands across J&K’s rural heartland  
In a major stride toward universal water access, Jammu and Kashmir has connected 81% of its rural households to tap water, according to the Jal Shakti Department. Out of 19.26 lakh rural homes, 15.63 lakh now have functional tap connections. The achievement is part of the Jal Jeevan Mission, a national initiative to ensure safe drinking water for all.

Srinagar and Ganderbal districts have become the first in the Kashmir division to achieve 100% rural tap water coverage, while other districts continue to progress steadily.

Notable updates:

• A total of 3,253 water supply schemes were launched under the mission, with a budget exceeding ₹13,334 crore  
• Of these, 1,480 schemes are fully functional, while over 1,600 are nearing completion  
• Remaining households, especially in districts like Doda, are being served through public stand posts  
• The mission’s next phase will focus on completing pending schemes and ensuring long-term sustainability

The milestone marks a significant leap in public health and rural development, with the government aiming for 100% coverage across all districts in the coming months.
