The 5G Halt: Why Jio and Airtel Are Slowing Down Their Network Rollout

Jio and Airtel substantially reduced their quarterly 5G base station additions to 8,000-9,000 in comparison to the 111,000 done during Q2FY24. The slowdown is due to lowered capital spends and completion of national 5G rollouts. Industry-wide reduction might affect tower companies such as Indus Towers. Vodafone Idea and BSNL will drive future growth with their current and scheduled 5G rollouts. The sluggish 5G uptake is also attributed to few compelling use cases and high costs of 5G smartphones.
