Forests accommodate more than 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity with innumerable species and intricate ecological relationships. They offer habitats, food, and shelter for animals and serve to regulate climate through the sequestration of carbon dioxide and emission of oxygen.

Human Dependence

Over 1.6 billion depend on forests for livelihood, food, and shelter. Forests provide clean air and water, fertile land, and natural resources such as timber and medicines. Forests' health depends on human health, and deforestation contributes to an increase in zoonotic diseases and affecting food security.

Climate Regulation

Forests play an important function in reducing climate change by absorbing about 2.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. Forest preservation can prevent extensive carbon emissions leading to global warming, and as such, the conservation of forests is a top strategy in the fight against climate change.

Economic Value

Sustainable forest management can support local economies and provide renewable resources. Forests contribute significantly to national incomes and local livelihoods, especially in rural areas where communities depend on forest resources.

Though crucial, forests are beleaguered by agricultural encroachment, logging, and urbanization. Since 1990 alone, the world has lost 420 million hectares of forest, placing a premium on working together to conserve these ecosystems for the future. Halting deforestation and rehabilitating degraded landscapes are some of the measures necessary to protect these systems for posterity.

Finally, the preservation of forests is not only an environmental issue but also a requirement to maintain life on Earth. It is imperative to take action to preserve these critical resources from being destroyed further.
