The WhatsApp Crackdown: How India's Largest Messaging Platform is Fighting Fraud

As a massive step towards curbing misuse, WhatsApp blocked 99.67 lakh Indian accounts in January 2025. The transparency report of the Meta-owned application for the month shows that 13.27 lakh accounts were preemptively banned prior to reports from users. The crackdown targets spam, scam, and infringement of WhatsApp terms of service.

The platform logged 9,474 user reports of abuse, with 239 of them triggering account actions. WhatsApp's abuse system works on three levels: registration, messaging, and user feedback. AI and machine learning are used by the company to detect suspicious behavior and illegal use.

This move supports India's IT Rules 2021, reflecting WhatsApp's assurance to keep its user base safe. As online scams increase in India, with more than INR 107 crore lost to web-based frauds in the first nine months of FY25, this ban reflects the platform's initiative to keep its extremely large user base secure.
