Tilted Towers And Broken Roads: Satellites Reveal Mexico City’s Accelerating Ground Collapse

Mexico City, home to over 22 million people, is built on an ancient lakebed that has been compacting for more than a century. The latest NISAR satellite imagery, collected between October 2025 and January 2026, shows parts of the city sinking by more than 2 cm per month, making it one of the fastest-subsiding megacities in the world.

Why The City Is Sinking

The primary driver is groundwater extraction. As aquifers beneath the city are depleted, the clay-rich soil compresses, leading to uneven sinking. This has left roads cracked, metro lines distorted, and monuments like the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Angel of Independence visibly tilted.

NASA-ISRO Monitoring

The NISAR satellite (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) is tracking subsidence in real time with centimetre-level accuracy. Its L-band radar penetrates cloud cover and vegetation, providing continuous monitoring of Mexico City’s ground movement. This data is crucial for urban planners and engineers to identify high-risk zones and reinforce infrastructure.

Socio-Economic Impact

Subsidence is worsening Mexico City’s water crisis, damaging pipelines and drainage systems. Repair costs are mounting, and millions of residents face risks to housing stability and transport safety. Experts warn that without reducing groundwater dependence, the city could sink by another 12 meters over the next century.
