Trump's Pressure Pushes Japan to Rethink Defense Strategy

U.S. President Donald Trump's renewed criticism of the U.S.-Japan security treaty is prompting Tokyo to reassess its defense posture. Trump has repeatedly questioned the treaty's fairness, suggesting it is one-sided and economically disadvantageous to the U.S. This pressure has led Japan to increase its defense spending, aiming to double its budget to 2% of GDP by 2027. However, Trump's administration is pushing for further increases, potentially up to 3% of GDP. Japan is navigating this challenge while maintaining its strategic alliance with the U.S., emphasizing mutual benefits and shared security interests in the face of regional threats from China and North Korea.
