Tunnel to Tomorrow: India's Largest TBM Passes Tests, Bringing Mumbai Closer

The Mumbai-based Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project has achieved an important milestone as the first of four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) have successfully undergone Factory Acceptance Tests. Identified as TBM S-1400A, the machine features a huge 13.2-meter diameter cutterhead, and it is the biggest TBM to be installed in Mumbai so far. The project will develop an 11.84-kilometer long tunnel under Sanjay Gandhi National Park, linking Borivali and Thane. When finished, it will shorten travel time between the two spots from 1-2 hours to 15 minutes. It will have three lanes in every direction and will be ready to operate by mid-2028, transforming travel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
