Turkey's Strategic Moves: Expanding Influence in the Indian Ocean

The Maldives appears to be deepening its partnership with Turkey, raising questions about the latter's growing strategic presence in the Indian Ocean. Recent developments include Turkey gifting a refurbished Dogan-class fast-attack missile boat, GCG Volkan, to the Maldives National Defence Force. This vessel, equipped with advanced over-the-horizon strike capabilities, marks a significant milestone in Turkish naval modernization and signals Ankara's intent to strengthen its foothold in the region.

 

Additionally, Turkey has delivered three of the promised six drones for aerial surveys of the vast seas surrounding the Maldives. Training for Maldivian personnel has already begun in Turkey, with further sessions planned upon the vessel's arrival. These moves align with Turkey's broader strategy to expand its naval access and force projection capabilities across critical maritime corridors.

 

The partnership has sparked concerns among regional powers like India, which views external military buildups in its surrounding maritime backyard with unease. Analysts suggest that Turkey's growing influence in the Maldives could challenge India's strategic calculus in the Indian Ocean.
