Two Wheels, One Mission: Bihar's Cycle Scheme Empowers Girls Worldwide

Bihar's innovative bicycle program, initiated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in 2006, has been replicated in Zambia. The scheme, named, Mukhyamantri Balika Cycle Yojana , was implemented to improve girls' education by equipping them with bicycles. The scheme was replicated in Zambia, where it has helped considerably to improve school attendance and curb late arrival among girls. Experiments have proved a 27% decline in absenteeism and 66% drop in late coming in Zambia. Its success has translated into its implementation in six additional African nations, and the United Nations has endorsed it as a method to empower women and raise school enrollment.
