Unlocking Efficiency: Delhi’s Plan to Reshape with Two Fresh Districts

The Delhi Cabinet has granted in-principle approval to restructure the city’s administrative boundaries, with the proposal now seeking final consent from the Lieutenant Governor. The plan also includes increasing the number of sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) offices from 33 to 39 and merging the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment areas into the New Delhi district.

Key highlights:

Total number of revenue districts will increase from 11 to 13.

Expansion of SDM offices from 33 to 39 for better local administration.

Proposal aims to reduce jurisdictional overlaps and public inconvenience.

Mini-secretariats planned in each district for most departmental services, excluding law and order.

The new districts will be formed by replacing East and North-East districts with Shahdara North and Shahdara South.

Existing North district will be divided into Civil Lines and Old Delhi districts.

South-West district will largely form the new Najafgarh district.

The revamp intends to enhance coordination, faster grievance redressal, and improved service accessibility for Delhi residents.
