Unlocking the Past: Bandra in Mumbai Suburban, to Host Maharashtra's Revolutionary Heritage Vault

The Maharashtra government has agreed to construct a new archives building in Bandra (East) to accommodate the state's rich heritage history. Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar announced that the "Maha Archives Building" would be built on a 6,691 sq. m. landholding to address the shortage of space at the current Elphinstone College site. The new building will include temperature and humidity-controlled archival rooms, a restoration wing, a reprography division, a state-of-the-art research center, and an exhibition gallery. The project is being carried out to keep some 10.5 crore historical documents currently maintained by the Directorate of Archives, which has been operating since 1821. The project is an indicator of the government's resolve to conserve valuable national assets and make them available to future generations of researchers and historians.
