Vizhinjam Welcomes MSC IRINA: A Historic Docking for South Asia

A Landmark Moment for Indian Maritime Trade

The world's largest container vessel, MSC IRINA, will call at Vizhinjam International Seaport on Monday, making its first visit to a South Asian port.

The vessel, owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, has a massive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, beating the earlier record-holder OOCL Spain by 150 TEUs.

Measuring 399.9 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, MSC IRINA is almost four times the length of a FIFA football pitch, designed to move enormous cargo volumes between Europe and Asia.

Strategic Significance of Vizhinjam Port

The berthing of MSC IRINA underscores Vizhinjam's increasing ability to handle Ultra-Large Container Vessels, confirming its position as a strategic node for global logistics.

The port, built under a public-private partnership between the Kerala government and Adani Ports, has already received other giant vessels, such as MSC Türkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini.

The achievement is on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurating the port on May 2, further reinforcing its role in India's maritime network.

Sustainability and Engineering Excellence

MSC IRINA is designed to stack containers 26 tiers high, optimizing cargo efficiency.

The ship features energy-efficient designs that curb carbon emissions by as much as 4 percent, in line with global sustainability targets. 

Flying the Liberian flag, MSC IRINA was christened in March 2023 and set sail on its maiden voyage in April of the same year. 

Wider Implications for Trade and Connectivity

The entry of MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam is likely to increase trade links between Europe and Asia, enhancing logistics efficiency.

The capacity of the port to accommodate such huge ships makes it a major contributor in international shipping, enticing greater global trade prospects.
