Volume Down at Spotify: Layoffs Echo Across the Tech Tracklist

Spotify made news in December 2023 by laying off 1,500 workers—17% of employees—in its largest-ever round of job cuts, in addition to earlier rounds of 600 and 200 layoffs that year. Overall 2023 layoffs totaled some 2,300, or 27.5% of employees, a more severe cut than nearly all of the industry's top tech players. To put that in perspective, Amazon, Meta, Google, and Microsoft also made deep cuts, but Spotify's percentage was one of the industry's highest. CEO Daniel Ek put down economic strain and the need to "rightsize" costs on industrywide trends of restructuring and cost savings.

The terminations disrupted more business than anticipated, with the administration admitting that change from hypergrowth to maturity would be difficult.

Despite cuts, Spotify continues investing in cornerstone events and maintaining its flexible work-from-anywhere structure, differing on a cultural front from certain peers.
