Voter ID, Aadhaar Sync: Poll Body’s Plan Faces Congress’ Criticism

To get rid of duplicate and fraudulent voters, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced plans to connect voter ID cards (EPIC) with Aadhaar. In accordance with Supreme Court decisions and Article 326 of the Constitution, the action, which was discussed at a high-level meeting on March 18, 2025, intends to purify the electoral rolls. Technical consultations between ECI and UIDAI are scheduled to commence shortly, and the linking process will be voluntary. While applauding the initiative, the Congress underlined the necessity of safeguards to guarantee that no eligible voter is denied the right to vote. Party leaders emphasised privacy issues and voter list inconsistencies, especially during the Maharashtra elections. They urged the ECI to remain transparent and consult all parties involved. Aadhaar would only be used as evidence, the ECI explained that Aadhaar would only serve as proof of identity, not citizenship, and assured compliance with legal provisions.
