Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan held his first formal meeting with floor leaders of all political parties, urging cooperation for the smooth conduct of the Upper House. Emphasizing dialogue, discipline, and democratic debate, he seeks to strengthen parliamentary democracy during the upcoming Winter Session.
In a crucial step toward strengthening democratic processes, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, who also chairs the Rajya Sabha, convened his first meeting with floor leaders of all political parties. The meeting, held in the Parliament complex, set the tone for a cooperative approach ahead of the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
Radhakrishnan emphasized the four pillars of parliamentary democracy—dialogue, deliberation, debate, and discussion—highlighting the need for a respectful and orderly functioning of the Rajya Sabha. He reminded leaders that the Constitution of India and the Rajya Sabha Rules serve as the guiding "Laxman Rekha," underscoring the shared responsibility to uphold the dignity and decorum of the House.
In his address, the Vice President encouraged full use of parliamentary mechanisms such as Zero Hour, Special Mentions, Question Hour, Private Members’ Business, and Short Duration Discussions to raise matters of public importance. He conveyed a firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of all members while ensuring that every moment spent in the House strengthens the democratic fabric of the nation.
The meeting witnessed a constructive tone with leaders from various parties, including ministers and deputy leaders, contributing suggestions. Opposition leaders urged for equitable time allocation to smaller parties and emphasized the importance of having adequate platforms to voice their concerns. Notably, there was a call for issues that have long been avoided, such as national security concerns and representation in select committees, to be given due attention.
Radhakrishnan assured that these suggestions would be thoughtfully considered to ensure that the Rajya Sabha functions efficiently and productively. Leaders appreciated the spirit of cooperation and expressed optimism for a smooth and meaningful Winter Session. The meeting concluded with an emphasis on mutual respect, collaboration, and a collective effort to move Indian parliamentary democracy forward with greater dignity.
