Warming Up: The Impact of India's 0.70°C Temperature Increase

Minister of Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh, has highlighted that India's mean annual surface air temperature has increased significantly by about 0.70°C over the past century. This warming trend is consistent with global patterns, reflecting the impact of climate change on the Indian subcontinent. The rise in temperature is more pronounced in certain regions, with northern, central, eastern, and north-eastern parts experiencing higher increases compared to the southern peninsula. This warming is linked to an increase in heatwaves, particularly in areas like Rajasthan, Punjab, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. The data underscores the need for climate resilience and adaptation strategies to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures on agriculture, ecosystems, and human settlements.
