Weather Twist: IMD Forecasts Thunderstorms and Winds to Shake Up Mumbai

Mumbai and Maharashtra will experience a sudden change in weather patterns as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put out warnings indicating rain, thunderstorms, and gale winds. The warnings are a relief from the prevailing heatwave, but they also indicate the possibility of disruptions throughout the state.

The IMD has predicted sporadic to scattered light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds of 40-50 km/h. Places like Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Pune, and Nashik have been issued yellow and orange alerts. Mumbai can witness light showers and thunderstorms, while places like Pune and interior Maharashtra can see intense weather activity with hailstorms.

Meteorologists place the blame for this unusual weather on a trough running across interior regions of Maharashtra at 0.9 km mean sea level. The trough is allowing easterly and westerly winds to meet, creating conducive conditions for rain activity. Cloudy conditions and dust storm-like conditions have already been observed in certain regions of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane.

The IMD has warned against taking action as these climatic conditions may affect agriculture in some regions. Farmers are especially worried about the damage that can be caused to horticulture crops such as mangoes by hailstorms and windy weather.

Though these showers will lower temperatures temporarily in coastal regions such as Mumbai, experts predict that this relief will be brief. Slow increase in maximum temperatures by 3-4°C is expected in the coming week in Maharashtra.
