Western Coalfields faces flat coal production at 69MT amid operational challenges in FY'25

Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India, is likely to maintain coal production at 69 million tonnes for FY'25, unchanged from the previous year. WCL achieved record output in FY'24 but is still facing huge operational challenges such as high production costs and limited reserves. Chairman Jai Prakash Dwivedi said that special mining conditions and price pressures are restricting growth prospects, and the projection is that it may even decline to 50 million tonnes by 2047. The company operates 52 mines in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, and there is a need for new reserves and strategic adaptation.
