The Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad has launched two postgraduate programmes: MTech in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Chemical Engineering and MTech in Computational Chemical Engineering, aimed at preparing engineers for the rapidly evolving digital and computational landscape of modern process industries.

 

The MTech in AI/ML in Chemical Engineering integrates chemical engineering fundamentals with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-driven modelling, training students to apply advanced algorithms and analytics to problems such as process optimisation, materials discovery, reaction engineering, smart manufacturing, and sustainable energy systems. The companion programme in Computational Chemical Engineering focuses on multiscale modelling, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and molecular simulations.

The programmes aim to address the growing use of digital tools such as artificial intelligence, advanced simulations, and data analytics in industries including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, energy, and advanced materials. Prof. B S Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, stated that India needs AI programmes to be built on engineering foundations rather than as standalone AI programmes for Viksit Bharat to be achieved, adding that engineering innovation today is increasingly driven by data, computation, and intelligent systems.

 

Admission, Eligibility, And What Applicants Should Know

 

Most applicants must have a valid GATE score in chemical engineering or biotechnology, though IIT graduates meeting the institute's CGPA threshold may be considered via a separate interview pathway without a GATE score.

 

Admissions to the programmes will begin in the upcoming academic cycle through the Common Online Admission Portal and GATE-based selection, with graduates expected to work in sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, energy systems, and digital manufacturing.
